Biography

After graduating from Gymnasium in her native Zürich, Dorothea Galli Bamert studied cello with André Navarra at the Northwest German Music Academy in Detmold, where she received her „Konzertreifeprüfung“ with distinction. She subsequently worked in the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, the Cologne Chamber Orchestra and the Camerata Zürich. She also performed as soloist with various orchestras, including the Radio Orchestra of Italian Switzerland in Lugano, and as a chamber player in various ensembles.

She then studied voice with Elsa Cavelti, Carla Castellani and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. While preparing for a stage career at the International Opera Studio in Zürich, she was a prize winner at the International Vocal Competition in Geneva.

She appeared both as an ensemble member and as a guest in opera productions in Gelsenkirchen, Zürich, Luzern, Mannheim, Düsseldorf, Karlsruhe, Amsterdam and Heidelberg, initially as a mezzo soprano, then as a lyric and young dramatic soprano (see Opera Repertoire). At the same time, she extended her concert repertoire to include all the important oratorios. Her Lied repertoire is documented in numerous radio recordings.

Since the birth of her two children, Dorothea Bamert-Galli has increasingly devoted herself to vocal pedagogy and guided more than 30 students to their pedagogical or performance diplomas. She teaches under the auspices of the SAMP (Swiss Academy of Musical Pedagogy), at the „Kalaidos Fachhochschule für Musik“ and also coaches post-graduate and professional singers.

She has also been active as a choral conductor, leading the Jubilate Choir in Dübendorf for 7 years, and has guest-conducted individual projects with other choral societies.

A board member of the Zürich Music Commission for 12 years, she was responsible for the awarding of grants to support vocal concerts.

She has been an adjudicator for the Swiss Music Pedagogical Society and an external examiner at the Musik Hochschule Zürich for many years, not only as a vocal expert, but also as state expert for all instruments. In addition, she has sat on the juries of national and international competitons, in particular in Russia. She regularly gives a guest master class at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg.

She speaks fluently French, Italian, English, Spanish and Russian.
